NS Bikes Soda FR in testing

We have been waiting for this moment for quite some time. After a few years spent on developing of our first full suspension frame the journey is slowly coming to an end.

As you may know, our company is based on the north shore of Poland with loads of big cliffs, hills and amazing riding spots. Every freerider will feel at home here, as long as he is prepared for some pedaling. That is why most people here, including NS employees, own a light freeride bike. The owner of NS Bikes - Szymon Kobyliński is no stranger to downhill and freeride too. He had been competing successfully in Polish national downhill championships, taking the podium several times. So for us it was a very natural step to branch out of the dirt-street scene into the freeriding scene, but we didn't want to take any shortcuts, which is why everything has taken so long.

Our whole NS design and test team has been focusing lately on developing the freeride version of NS Bikes Soda. Our aim was to build a bike that could be best described as a new-school freerider which is light and agile enough for technical tricks, yet stable enough for fast, big lines. And yes it also has to go uphill so that we could get to our favorite lines that are deep in the heart of the forest. We think we achieved our goal, and if all goes well, the frame will soon be going into production.

One of the things that we decided at the beginning of the project is that we don't want to push any crazy new suspension design solutions just for the sake of having something to brag about. We all know that companies love to come up with designs that are “breakthrough”, just so they can say that they invented some revolutionary system. But we know from our own experience, that so many of these revolutions actually work pretty bad, and they are in the bikes ONLY to create marketing buzz. Instead we decided to take a pretty standard system, but instead focus on fine tuning it to achieve a great and reliable bike.

With proper set up this Soda FR can be used in extreme enduro marathons and trail riding. If you decide to go big you can swap the light fork, suspension seatpost and other light components for something stronger and shred away. And thanks to two suspension and two chainstay settings, the bike can be transformed from a flickable trick bike into a more traditional, heavy duty, stable freeride machine.

The project could not been completed without the help of our test riders. Our local star - Blaady was one of the guys to get involved in the testing. His prototype Soda, having previously been tested for many months in enduro-trail conditions by the boss, went on to take a beating in the toughest freeriding conditions. North shores, huge drops, fast single tracks, technical downhill sections. The Soda passed them all in flying colors.

Check out this short edit by Digital Kebab made during the testing.

A few words from Blaady himself: “The bike is an ideal option for new school freeriders who want a flickable bike on which you can do all the biggest moves, and at the same time pedal to your favourite riding spot. One of the most noticeable things is how easy it is to launch it on jumps. During the testing I rode all my favourite lines on which I normally have to pedal like crazy to clear them on my old bike. On the Soda, even when I take it easy, I can clear everything without even breaking a sweat. So knowing that the bike flies like a dream, in the short travel / short chainstay mode, I was worried about fast gnarly downhill runs. However here the Soda proved to be totally at home. You just have to adjust a few bolts and the bike becomes stable and plush. We still have a few minor issues to iron out, but I'm confident that this bike will be a great sucess in the comming season.”

The Soda in slopestyle and freeride versions will be offered as frames and complete bikes. The final configurations, colors and prices will be presented at the Eurobike trade show this year.

I think as a sloepstyle frame it's very appealing, but I think the freeride market already has a lot of more capable bikes.

I think NS are trying to breed a new kind of freeride bike rather than try and make another bike like all of the others. Just looks like a longer travel slopestyle bike to me. Not really sure where the market is. Slopestyle riders will buy a slopestyle bike and freeriders will buy a proper freeride bike. I might be wrong, maybe there is a gap in the market and NS are targeting it.

You can see in the vid the shock doesn't move very much and doesn't track as well as most freeride bikes. It doesn't look like you could ride DH on it like you could most freeride bikes. As I said earlier it seems to be more of a long travel slopestyle bike than a freeride bike. Or maybe just a new type of freeride bike.

flag tom666 (May 24, 2011 at 13:57)
chrome finish looks good and I actualy think the whole thing looks mint, but the air shock is probrebly there for weight which may not be the best thing to be concentrating on and the bike has really been designed for jumping and having fun on the bike by the looks of it rather than speed. It's no conventional freeride bike.

They could have written that it is an awrsome bike they are very happy how ot turned out after years of development and cooperation with our best riders etc. You know "western companies" don't go into that "we're better than someone" area with their marketing strategies, at least not giving a simple design seen on plenty of other bikes, as an argument for that :/

About merida. Not sure exactly but since they are a major shareholder in Specializedbikes and they produce a lot for them I wouldn't be surprised if Merida made eee Demo? Oh nooo please say it's ain't so, noo noooo! Merida has the most sophisicated production line of all companies and is the biggest producer in the world, their welds are done by robots and they are next to perfect even on cheaper frames. I have no idea who in far east welds frames for NS but this weld looked so perfect that I thought it's from a robot - so a compliment for them

And if it is made by merida robots? robots are better at precision stuff than humans and they can track a movment 10000000 times exactly the sam way so id trust a robot welded frame ofcorse there are some inspections made but robot welding is cheaper and more accurate. Anyway i like the bike seems like a nice mix of enduro an freeride wich is growing in trend.

I would say good welder is better than present welding robots. E.g. Man can adapt to changes in the weld puddle.
  • + 2
flag spaced (May 23, 2011 at 10:10)
You are wrong. A high quality robot can make a seamless weld (ie. without that stack of coins look). Not only that but a robot = constant quality on all the bikes as it never gets tired or distracted. Go to some metal material expo. Im quite sure there is one in Kielce (or was last year) but its probably not the only one and you will see that the only reason why we dont see it in bikes is price.

  • + 1
flag WAKIdesigns (May 24, 2011 at 0:13)
To bring a bit of "socialism" here, I can only say that we all love to buy a highest possible quality at possibly low price. Such dream situation does not exist. Automated production is can bring us that, along with some crap. Trouble is: if we all think that way, one day our boss will come and tell us: sorry you have to go, technology got so good, we don't need you, we invested in this and this machine or computer with intelligent software - suddenly you don't have money for that superb quality...

So taking all factors into account I say: Man made welds FTW!*

  • + 1
flag whitemiscief (May 24, 2011 at 10:12)
I assume a machine can't match human perfection when building wheels, spoke tension is very important. But when it comes to a headtube weld, leave it to the machines...
  • + 1
flag spaced (May 24, 2011 at 11:48)

  • + 2
flag wastedqba (May 25, 2011 at 4:01)
Spaced you would be right if meterials would be ideal, with a constant content of elements and phases and without any inclusions. But they aren't. And I'm not talking about poor quailty materials made in far east for shovels, but about those made e.g. in US for aerospace industry. Robots cannot adjust to what is going on in puddle. Man can, if he knows what to do. In fixed conditions (including alloys, interference fit and others) machines would be better.

  • + 1
flag spaced (May 25, 2011 at 9:53)
Yes but thats only one area where a welder has an advantage over a machine(where in other places machines win). Not to mention how many really good welders are in the bike industry? Frank at FTW, guys at Nicolai and who else? Intense? Pffft.

As for adjusting for what goes in the puddle. Theoreticaly it's possible, even if such robots are not produced right now. Almost everything can be quantified and if it can, a robot will be better than a human. The only question is available technology and PRICE Wink
  • + 1
flag wastedqba (May 29, 2011 at 13:34)
And I will agree with that. In near future robots will be better than humans in welding. But there will be always place for humans (e.g. prototyping and production for smaller scale).

I just wonder how the bike welds made by robots are better for everyday use? Merida frames are not the strongest one, nor the lightest nor cheapest.
  • + 1
flag spaced (May 29, 2011 at 13:41)
Because weld quality has very little efect on bike durability as long as they are not completely f*cked up. Desing is a zillion times more important. That's why the whole tw vs us/eur thing is silly. A nicely welded frame looks nicer and that's all Wink

Why do people always expect bike companies to re-invent the wheel??

I own a Bottlerocket and can say that the suspension design is one of the best I have ridden for a short travel bike. NS obviously agree and made their own platform for the people who like the brand.

They tweek something here, shift a pivot point there and ultimately come up with ride that make look similar to others but have a different feel.

You don't see Fox, Rock Shox, Marzocchi etc coming out with radical fork designs - they know what platform works and refine the valving, construction etc.

There are only so many ways you can build a FS frame and wasting R&D dollars on something just to be radical isn't exactly the smartest thing to do.

flag spaced (May 22, 2011 at 6:19) (Below Threshold) show comment
Actually fox and rock shox made big changes in the last few years to their forks. They just dont make a fuss about it as 90% of the people dont understand it.

I also understand the fuss. It is a nice looking bike but nothing really sets it apart from a zillion of other offers on the market. It seems a bit pointless. I agree for what they want it thats the best susp idea but it can be executed in a zillion other ways. For me doing a tiny tweak to a project you dont own and selling as yours is just lazy engineering.

"Actually fox and rock shox made big changes in the last few years to their forks. ... It is a nice looking bike but nothing really sets it apart from a zillion of other offers on the market."

Man you don't see the point! The point is that they all look pretty much the same (forks, frame linkages) but they are making changes that you can not see just like that - by that I mean the pivot points, chainstay length etc. And why would anyone bother to invent something new and "revolutionary", when they have a good platform that they tweak to be better or to ride different.

Look at car suspension, chassis for a comparison, there are only a few different types of it, and every manufacturer uses them and no one is talking shit like here about bikes...
  • + 1
flag spaced (May 22, 2011 at 10:06)
Nope man, it is you who doesnt get the point if you point at cars. They use the same suspension but LOOK DIFFERENT. Same for bikes - most of them use really simple suspension yet you would have to be blind to not to see a differance between a buel and a motoguzi. That is what Im talking about. There are similar desings to the bottle/soda/etc that are different - ie. dartmoor wish, banshee wildcard, kona entourage, commencal supreme. All are basicly a faux bar single pivot.
Also dont claim the differances will be big, its a fun bike for a park. Bottle has its problems but some of the bikes are very nice and the design is so simple you could teach a monkey to desing it. The pivot is as low over the bb as possible with a rocker for progression. Like most of the bikes in this segment. Not to mention imho it should be a bit higher with that amount of travel as I guess it wont be only used on smooth as pavement trails.

btw. Forks are standarised because of the technology available. It is much harder to make a different looking for than a different looking frame.

spaced- I had this particular bike in numbers of times. Blaady is my friend and we were playing with this soda for some time... Yes its not revolutionary BUT ITS NOT ITS AIM. Mayby to many big words in the news but its very nice peace of bike. First thing that is not mentioned here is that it has numbers of possible set'ups which you can adjust in 5min before riding. You can choose between 150 -170 rear travel you can make your chainstay long or short etc. The aim of this bike is to be very universal yet light and agile. We got friend who also have this prototype with boxxers in the front and spring rear shock instead of air shock. Belive me or not but it becomes mini dh. And last thing : this movie edit was not made for NS order .Blaady as a builder wanted to capture his trails while they still exist (constant war with park rangers). Meanwhile he got this prototype for tests... thats the whole story. DONT GET ME WRONG im not saying that this is a perfect bike but saying its a clone becouse it looks familiar is a kind of ignorance
  • + 1
flag spaced (May 22, 2011 at 12:12)
I was not saying it was a clone. I was saying making it stand out makes sense from a marketing point of view. Especialy since it borrows heavily from whats already on the market. It probably isnt bike but some people make it the egineering advance of the year.
Its an iteration, not a clone. I think NS crazy marketing really puts off some people of their products.

As for a mini dh bike - show me a video of susp action on square edged bumps and than we can talk. The main pivot is too low and the rearward component of the axle path will be minimal.

I really like it, but I've always been a fan of this particular suspension design... in fact, it looks like a longer travel version of my current AM rig. Many companies over the years have used this design... from Kona, to Jamis, to Proflex/K2 and so on. To me, it just means that it's a proven design. Make some small design tweeks/modifications here and there to improve certain characteristics, but as was stated above... why re-invent the wheel when you don't have to?

lol I thought the intention of this frame was for martin soderstom to have an ns slopestyle bike (hence the name 'soda') rather than use that cove? It seems like since he isn't on NS they've changed the frames purpose to be more fr than slopestyle. Would have been a sik vid with soderstom threeing drops and stuff...

Don't get me wrong guys,I'm really happy, that polish companies like NS Bikes evolve and develope new products, but in my opinion, that frame and the whole bike is nothing new.just looks like a Bottle Rocket,Jamis Parker etc. And to be honest,it looks so much worse than them... I look on that bike and my only thought is that bike is just ugly and there;s no way I would buy that frame for myself.

I'd def go with Dartmoor Wish instead of Soda...

The wish has gone some nice little changes for v2, I'm on the V1 and I'm stoked at what it's handling! just trying to get more footage but it's been fairly wet n windy, hoping to get some FR done on it soon and it will be racing the winter DH series.

In my opinion Soda looks like a bike from year around 2005...
I'm sure it rides very good, but there's nothing that makes this bike stand out from all the rest. Wish is simply better looking frame and I'm pretty sure it has got shorter chainstays, because Soda's look pretty long.

I'm going to ask Jan "Elvis" Kiliński to lend me some frame for a test.... Smile

flag a1n2d3r4z5e6j7 (May 22, 2011 at 6:07)
The main reason why you're getting neg props is your attitude to NS bikes from the start, it hurts that they will sell a lot of them, right? Your comments about their frames being crafted my Merida, and "marketing bullshit" are here just because you can't stand when Polish brand makes another big step? Personally I don't use their components anymore, but still I think they are quality, so do most riders, who are actually riding their bikes. I had a chance to ride few bikes built on NS frames and other parts ( 26" ) and I was soo suprised when I tried tailwhips, 360, bars and other stuff and it was as easy and chill as on my bmx. Just like someone said before, you're "another fat pinkbike designer" talking shit, it doesn't matter if you ride or not, cause you still don't get what riding bikes is about.

flag spaced (May 22, 2011 at 6:20)
Actually having a bike build by merida is a good thing. Frames coming out of their factory are pobably the highest quality in TW.

Hehe it seems that it was you andrzej who wrote this pish. Tjat's the message i get from it: we know what riding a bike is about - and we will sell the bike to people wjo know it too - the Nu school Freeriders - the better people! Do i have to be chilled out on green stuff to get it? Dig your insane tricks sht and massive drops? Well don't tell me what is it, because I know what I like and I don't give a shyte what you think it is. And my attitude comes directly from NS stucking the nose up. Dartmoor or Zumbi never does it, you are tiny bit close to Duncon crap who believe they are the best in Poland.

Chill out kid. Also look outside your country a bit. There are many frames made by top notch welders with quality waaaay above that of ns (superco, blackmarket to name a few). NS is a good company but fanboys like you are what makes a lot of people dislike the company. Stop throwing poo and think for a while.

Interesting, this new breed actually have geometry that's alot more aggressive than even just a few seasons. The wish fits very nicely out on Australian downhill tracks with a 160mm fork, a 180mm would make it VERY suitable with a coil shock rear end.
